Lightbulb moment...

Have you ever had a moment when something so simple suddenly became incredibly clear and you wondered how it was that the truth had never dawned on you before? That happened to me tonight.

I was at a "girls' night out" dinner. About a dozen of us gathered at Bravo to visit with Jennifer -- the better half of WillBill -- a friend who had recently moved to Florida and was in town on a business trip. When you have that many people around a table, it's hard to converse with everyone. So as the main course was wrapping up and people were finishing their drinks, I excused myself from the foot of the table to the head so I could chat with the ladies at that end as well. (I didn't want to deny them my wit and charm!)

The conversation drifted to television shows. John & Kate + 8, The Real Housewives of Atlanta and Dancing with the Stars. None of which I ever watch, except John & Kate, though I can only stomach that one episode at a time.

"The only reality show I really watch is The Biggest Loser," I announced, ready for my dinner mates to join me in lamenting what a big mistake Amy C. made last night and what a royal PITA Vicky is.

Only there were no head nods, no "oh my gosh, can you believe its." A few blank stares and then Lori said, "Well, I don't watch the Biggest Loser. But I love to read about it on your blog." (Nice save, Lori!)

To which the other women at that end of the table concurred. They are not BL watchers either.

I couldn't believe my ears! What was this blasphemy I was hearing?! And then, looking around, I realized. All of these non-BL watchers are skinny.

Lightbulb moment: Skinny chicks do not watch The Biggest Loser!

I understand it. When I was in the throws of babymaking and childbirthing, I couldn't wait for the new episodes of A Baby Story. Now, I'd rather watch Ace of Cakes or Grey's Anatomy, or The Biggest Loser.

Why? Because I can relate. Ok, except that I can't make a fabulous cake that looks exactly like the Brooklyn Bridge or a rainbow trout -- though I can imagine the thought. And my sleepless nights are not caused by marathon operations that require my surgical skill and focus -- but I do understand how constant fatigue wears on a person. People watch what they know.

So, I've decided that if I want to be part of the conversation, I have to do something about it. Before the next girls' night out I have to make an effort to watch some of these other shows so I can talk about them intelligently -- or I just need to find some fat friends.

You know everytime Vicky opens her mouth I think 'OH MY her children, family, mother etc are hearing her talk like that.' I know that it is a game but really you still have to live with yourself after it is over.

I'm 5'5 and 136 pounds, and I watch the show. I may seem skinny to a lot of people, but I'm out of shape, and I used to be fit and 20 pounds lighter. So I watch the show to help motivate me to get healthy again. (Assuming I keep watching through all of the ugly behavior exhibited this season).

My 14 year old daughter and I are both at a healthy weight and we love the show (mostly, except Vicky). We love to see people transforming their lives.

We're not even big tv watchers. Biggest loser and Lost are the only shows we watch.

Or just brush up on skinny girl shows... what do skinny girls watch? Sex and The City isn't on anymore... Hmmmmm. Grey's Anatomy, maybe? Oh! Lipstick Jungle! Maybe? Not being a skinny girl... I have no clue!

Funny that you blogged about this! I was thinking the same thing the other night, that skinny people probably don't watch the show. BL fans are the big people eating their pizza and drinking their soda while they watch BL contestants work out and lose weight. That's what we do at our house anyway! ;)

Hey Amy, as a "skinny" girl I loved watching BL the two times I saw it. But I also tend to have a difficult time getting into conversations with friends about TV shows simply because I don't watch TV....we don't even have cable...but then I hate TV...for myself it is the biggest waste of time..I'd rather be running or talking to my plants! Good luck branching out and broadening your prime time TV conversation starters!

Take care,
E

Hi Amy!

I must not have heard that part of the conversation....maybe I had left already...LOL. I just don't watch that much TV, although I did get hooked on Dancing with the Stars for the first time just this year. I've put Salsa dancing lessons on my Christmas list...

And other than that, I love Thursday night on NBC....

You not-skinny friend,

Kris

I'll be your fat friend! I was horrified that Amy C. did not vote out that witch!!!! What happened that she wimped out after last week? I knew you would have something to say about it and I have been dying to get over here since I watched it!

And I was addicted to Baby Story when I was pregnant with Preston too and haven't watched a single episode since! lol Although my husband tried banning me from watching it because I was so emotional and ended up in tears all of the time. Part of me got scared to death of the impending birth watching it... and no he was NOT my first!

Isn't it all just crazy, but I do want to personally go and slap that Vicky girl. I am sorry, that was definitely not a christian thing to say! She is like the devil though!
