I gave in

For years, friends have been telling me that I should read books by Jodi Picoult. And for years, I've dismissed them, though I'm not sure exactly why. Some of it has to do with book snobbery -- I like to pick my own books and favorite authors and don't necessarily trust others to do it for me.

Despite that, I did pick up Picoult's My Sister's Keeper last night around 8:30pm. I read for about two hours and went to bed, only because my eyes wouldn't stay open wide enough to let me follow the words on the pages.

I woke up at 1am and had to start reading again. I read until 4:30am, hopeful that today will yield some opportunity for a nap. At 7:45am, Robbie stood over me asking for breakfast. I fixed his and mine along with it, reading as I ate.

Somewhere around 10:15am, I finished. But I am not happy. First, I kind of pride myself on being able to anticipate where a storyline is going. It's not often that I'm surprised by a plot. But I was definitely surprised by this book. And I am mad. I absolutely do not like the way it ended.

It's not that it was a bad ending or lacking in literary skill. But it's not what I wanted. I won't say anymore than that because I don't want to ruin it for anyone else who might choose to read it.

Regardless, I'm glad that I finally listened to the Picoult posse and picked up one of her books. For those of you who have read her before -- what's the next one I should try? If you've read My Sister's Keeper, were you satisified with the ending?

That was my first Piccoult book as well and I was stunned at the end, too. Took me a vouple of days to recover from it, really. And it left me hooked on Piccoult, too!!

Others that I've read and enjoyed...

The Pact, The Tenth Circle, Plain Truth, Keeping Faith

Next on my list is Nineteen Minutes.

I just finished that book a couple of weeks ago. It was a great book and I totally wasn't expecting that ending! I don't have any other Picoult books on my list for now.
I'm currently reading Three Junes by Julia Glass and it's rough going. Not the page turner I was hoping it would be. But I'm determined to finish it and soon!

I love Jodi Picoult. The book I read was My Sister's Keeper also. I was disappointed by the end. Not the way I wanted it to end either.

I really liked Plain Truth. I have read several, but my brain is failing me now. I did not like the one with the comic book parts. I couldn't get into it, and never finished it. Let us know what you pick up next.

Have you thought about sharing this on Biblio Crush??? http://www.facebook.com/home.php#/group.php?gid=34870709385&ref=ts I've read a few of her books and I generally end up depressed afterward. They tend to be very emotional. "19 Minutes" feels like its right out of the news. Books like that one make you fear. I have enough of that in my life.

Hey there - first time stopping by your blog. (can't resist commenting on my favorite thing - books. :)

i'm not a big Piccoult fan, but I LOVED My Sister's Keeper. The ending did not leave me satisfied the first time I read it, but after reading her comments on it, and rereading, I realized she was right when she said it was the only ending the kept true to every character. (Actually, the movie version hits theatres in June - and they changed the ending)
I've read Keeping Faith, which I did not enjoy, same with Plain Truth.

However, 19 Minutes was pure genius. Another "Holy flying saucers, where did that come from?" book.

happy reading. :)
